The dress was designed specifically for Mrs. Pix, by a “legitimate” designer I happened to discover quite by accident. Her hideaway shop was filled with the most amazing fabrics from all over the world – things you would never see even in high-end retail lines. Upon discovering her I would visit her shop now and then for the sheer hedonism of fondling her fabrics. We would talk about my interests, which eventually led to the idea that maybe she could make something for Mrs. Pix.
By the time I eventually brought Mrs. Pix to her shop, my new friend had a pretty good idea of the look we were heading toward – a Palmer Girl – a simple black tank with a deep open back and devastatingly short. Something so simple and classy would appeal to Mrs. Pix, and the luxury of the fabric – a thick, hyper-stretchy, second-skin velvet, would make it something remarkable.

We stopped on each floor, and after checking that the coast was clear, snapped a pic of the next stage of her strip. This quirky photo was taken on a shopping trip to a mainstream mall, spiced up by some casual, but inspirational clothing. We took advantage of the occasion to grab some pictures. My aim was to take some casual shots of her simply walking away into the mall entrance visible at upper right. I was set to do so … and … hello! She headed off in the wrong direction! You can sense that misdirection in the composition of the shot – my attention was to the right and she headed off to the left. (There’s a metaphor in there, for sure.) So this particular shot was a mistake, and by its nature, was unposed.
Once some shots were “in the can”, the camera was set aside and we went into the mall to so some ordinary shopping with Mrs. Pix attired exactly as you see here. One stop was in a bookstore, where books and magazines provided a natural bit camouflage, allowing people to hold them up pretending to be browsing, while discreetly peeking out over the top. There was definitely some discreet peeking and glancing going on – no one was following her or craning their necks, but eyes were definitely darting.
